Tree species identity drives soil organic carbon storage more than species mixing in major two-species mixtures (pine, oak, beech) in Europe

چکیده
Mixed forests are usually associated with higher aboveground carbon storage compared to the corresponding monocultures but information on impact of tree species mixing soil organic (SOC) is still limited. Yet, maximizing SOC crucial for ecosystem C sequestration and many other services. This study used a triplet approach (ie. two-species mixed stand respective pure stands at same site) assess identity in eight pine-oak, pine-beech five beech-oak triplets Europe. We sampled forest floor (FF) 0–40 cm mineral per 10 interval. For each type, we fitted basal area (BA) proportion one component (for identity) BA-based plot-level True Shannon Diversity index mixing) as explanatory variables stocks linear effects models, which included stone content plot BA covariates, site random intercept. Considering total depth (FF + cm), effect was only significant pine-oak explained more variability than across types. Species not any type depth. While consistently drove topsoil layers types, deeper except triplets. The results showed that stronger driver mixing. strongly related conifers vs broadleaves signature, drivers behind remained elusive. suggest targeted selection could better enhance European mere increase richness.

Tree species distribution in temperate forests is more influenced by soil than by climate
Knowledge of the ecological requirements determining tree species distributions is a precondition for sustainable forest management. At present, the abiotic requirements and the relative importance of the different abiotic factors are still unclear for many temperate tree species. We therefore investigated the relative importance of climatic and edaphic factors for the abundance of 12 temperate...
متن کاملProtein–Protein Interactions More Conserved within Species than across Species
Experimental high-throughput studies of protein-protein interactions are beginning to provide enough data for comprehensive computational studies. Today, about ten large data sets, each with thousands of interacting pairs, coarsely sample the interactions in fly, human, worm, and yeast. Another about 55,000 pairs of interacting proteins have been identified by more careful, detailed biochemical...
متن کاملAre hybrid species more fit than ancestral parent species in the current hybrid species habitats?
Hybrid speciation is thought to be facilitated by escape of early generation hybrids into new habitats, subsequent environmental selection and adaptation. Here, we ask whether two homoploid hybrid plant species (Helianthus anomalus, H. deserticola) diverged sufficiently from their ancestral parent species (H. annuus, H. petiolaris) during hybrid speciation so that they are more fit than the par...

Multi-species reaction-diffusion systems, with more-than-two-site interaction on a one-dimensional lattice are considered. Necessary and sufficient constraints on the interaction rates are obtained, that guarantee the closedness of the time evolution equation for Ea n (t)’s, the expectation value of the product of certain linear combination of the number operators on n consecutive sites at time...
متن کاملDo major species concepts support one, two or more species within Cryptococcus neoformans?
Cryptococcus neoformans, the agent of cryptococcosis, had been considered a homogeneous species until 1949 when the existence of four serotypes was revealed based on the antigenic properties of its polysaccharide capsule. Such heterogeneity of the species, however, remained obscure until the two morphologically distinct teleomorphs of C. neoformans were discovered during the mid 1970s. The tele...
